SONS OF SOCRATES
Occult of Reason
We are not a traditional record label or publisher that dictates the artistic expression of our members. Instead, we function as a collaborative cooperative, respecting each contributor’s full autonomy over their creative work. However, our collective mission is to promote the call for virtue found within the diverse expressions of our collaborators, encouraging a dialogue that elevates the human experience.
Positive liberty is the freedom to pursue one’s potential and achieve personal goals. This encompasses access to the resources, opportunities, and support necessary for individual growth and creative fulfillment. In contrast, negative liberty is the freedom from interference by others, emphasizing individual autonomy and the right to express oneself without external constraints, as long as such expression does not infringe upon the rights of others.
It is crucial to recognize the pitfalls of ideologies that seek to impose a singular cultural perspective. Communism falters by attempting to enforce cultural values through legal means, thereby infringing on individuals’ negative liberties and limiting their freedom of expression. Yet, it is essential to clarify that negative liberty is a fundamental legal right that protects individual freedom. Positive liberty, on the other hand, is a cultural issue, concerned with the societal support and values that enable individuals to realize their potential to bring about the general will. When viewed in this light, we find that there is no inherent contradiction between these two concerns.
Our goal is to create a collaborative environment where both positive and negative liberty are upheld. We do not tyrannically decide what views our members are allowed to express. However, as a society, we are entitled to the same negative liberty and reserve the right to withdraw support for projects of dissenting views that run counter to our predefined goals. This approach ensures that we honor individual autonomy while remaining steadfast in our collective aim of promoting virtuous and meaningful artistic expression.
